Planning Commercial Lighting Upgrades While Your Knoxville Business Stays Open
By Scruffy City Construction · Published October 24, 2026
Lighting work affects more than the ceiling. For an occupied office, shop, or business property, the project also involves employee work areas, customer access, equipment, and the hours available for installation.
Before ordering fixtures, define what needs to improve and how the work can fit around operations. Scruffy City Electric, the electrical division of Scruffy City Construction, discusses commercial electrical improvements alongside lighting design and renovation coordination.
Start with the problems in each area
Walk through the property during normal business hours. Identify dim work surfaces, uncomfortable reflections, inconsistent light color, failed fixtures, and areas where lights remain on unnecessarily.
Describe what happens in each space. A reception area, stockroom, workstation, and customer display may need different lighting approaches. Share any planned furniture or layout changes before finalizing fixture locations.
The Department of Energy’s commercial lighting guidance recommends choosing lighting for the application and tasks, considering light distribution, and avoiding unnecessary overlighting.
Review fixtures and controls together
A lighting upgrade may involve replacement lamps, retrofit kits, complete fixtures, or changes to the controls. Ask which approach fits the existing installation and what compatibility checks are needed.
Occupancy sensors, dimming, and daylight-responsive controls can be useful in suitable spaces. Their value depends on how the rooms are used and whether the selected equipment works together. DOE guidance discusses control strategies during lighting selection; its federal purchasing rules should not be assumed to govern a private business.
If energy savings are part of the decision, request a comparison based on the proposed equipment and actual operating hours. A general savings percentage cannot establish what your property will save.
Define installation windows and shutdowns
Give the project team your operating hours, busiest periods, restricted areas, and equipment that must remain available. Before scheduling, discuss:
- Which areas can be closed temporarily.
- Whether electrical shutdowns affect other equipment.
- How staff and customers will be separated from work areas.
- Where materials and access equipment can be placed.
- Whether any work requires an agreed period outside normal operations.
Working in stages may be practical, but continued occupancy depends on the actual conditions and safety plan. Confirm the sequence before treating uninterrupted operation as part of the agreement.
Keep exit lighting and access in the plan
Ordinary room lighting, emergency lighting, and exit signs serve different purposes. Identify these systems before planning shutdowns or replacing fixtures.
OSHA’s exit-route requirements address adequate exit-route lighting and operational emergency safeguards, including exit lighting. During repairs or alterations, required exit routes must remain available for employee occupancy and existing fire protections maintained, or equivalent alternate protection furnished. Have the responsible project professionals address these requirements in the work plan.
Confirm requirements for the property
The City of Knoxville lists commercial electrical permits for commercial wiring and equipment. Discuss the proposed work with the appropriate permitting authority before installation; requirements depend on the property’s location and scope.
If lighting is part of a larger tenant renovation, coordinate electrical decisions with the overall construction plan.
Ask for a scope you can compare
A useful proposal should identify the fixtures and controls, included wiring changes, removal and disposal, access needs, shutdown arrangements, testing, and any finish repairs or exclusions.
Before the walkthrough, gather the property address, photos, approximate fixture counts, operating hours, and a short list of priorities.
