Flickering Lights in Your Knoxville Home: What to Notice Before You Call
By Scruffy City Electric · Published October 29, 2026
A flickering light is easy to dismiss, especially when it stops on its own. But the pattern can help you describe the problem when you call for service. It cannot, by itself, tell you which part of the electrical system needs attention.
Where and when does it happen?
First, note where it happens. Is it one light, several lights in a room, or lights in different parts of the house? Then note when it happens: every time a particular light is switched on, occasionally, or around the time another appliance runs. You do not need to recreate the problem or open an electrical box to gather these details.
Notice other warning signs
Also pay attention to other warning signs. The Electrical Safety Foundation International lists dimming or flickering lights alongside buzzing, warm or discolored switches and outlets, sparks, and a burning smell as reasons to have a qualified electrician inspect a home’s electrical system. If you notice those signs, report them when you call. Read ESFI’s electrical safety guidance and home wiring safety tips.
Does flickering mean you need a new panel?
Flickering lights do not automatically mean you need a new electrical panel. The right next step is to identify what is happening before deciding on a repair or upgrade. If an inspection raises questions about the panel, our Knoxville panel-upgrade guide explains what an assessment considers.
